Fleet Radios, Tires, and Diagnostic Tools: Match Your Setup to Your Fleet Size

There's no single answer for how much to spend on fleet radios, tires, and diagnostic tools. That's not me being vague—it's just the truth. Radios: Keep It Simple

For basic codes and live data, that combo covers around 80% of what a small fleet needs. The catch is OBD2 IM readiness. A lot of cheap apps either can't read it or make it confusing. If your vehicles need an emissions check, the readiness monitors have to be "ready" or you'll fail. I've seen trucks turned away because someone cleared a code and reset the monitors without thinking.

Jump Starters: Don't Overthink It

A Hot Shot jump starter (or any similarly sized unit) is plenty for a gasoline-powered van or light truck. We bought a huge commercial unit in year one, and it sat in the corner for months. Match the tool to the vehicle. Small fleet, small tool.

Scenario 2: Medium Fleet (6–20 vehicles)

This is no-man's land, honestly. You have enough vehicles that something is always in the shop, but you don't have the volume to demand rock-bottom pricing. You need consistency more than savings.

Radios: Time to Mount Them

At this fleet size, handhelds get annoying. Drivers lose them, batteries die, and the range is just too short. Install fixed CB radios in the vehicles. When we specced our ten trucks, I paired them with a better Midland CB radio antenna and a permanent mount. Magnetic mounts are fine for temporary setups, but they don't survive Michigan winters. If you're in construction or off-road work, go with a taller antenna. One-time cost, fewer dropped calls.

Tires: Track Your Wear Data

Scenario 3: Larger Fleet (20+ vehicles)

At this size, you're no longer buying equipment per vehicle—you're buying a system. Your priorities shift to standardization, inventory, and uptime.

Radios: Standardize Everything

I didn't push for standardization until we hit 24 vehicles, and I regret that. With 20+ vehicles, you want the same model CB radio, the same antenna, the same mounts across the board. Then you can carry one spare part inventory. Keep a couple of Midland CB radio antennas and mounting kits in the warehouse. When one breaks, the fix is a 20-minute stock part, not an emergency purchase.

Tires: Build a Fleet Program

Jump Starters: Match Engine Types

  • Check your engine mix. Gas-only fleets can use smaller jump starters and simpler scanners. Diesels change the math.

Antenna cable, readiness monitors, tire pressure, jump starter charge—five minutes total. Since we started, roadside failures have dropped by maybe 40%.
