Portable Power: When "Equivalent" Means Nothing

The bigger issue showed up when I inspected the telecommunications portable power units. These are the battery and inverter boxes that keep radios and network gear alive at remote sites when there's no grid power. Our spec was clear: pure sine wave output, minimum 1,000W continuous, verified by a 600W load test before acceptance.

The contractor had installed modified sine wave inverters instead. They were a bit cheaper, and they were making the client's radios hum, the power supplies buzz, and one control unit repeatedly reset itself.
